Geek Heaven - iPhone

Stood in line today for the new iPhone, texting Seth in Boston (he only got his first since he had the timezone on his side!) and Andrew in Fort Worth, and then Jim & Burt in Dallas (I do not think they got in line like us geeks - Seth, Andrew and I.
This is the line both front of, back of and round the corner of me.

I hope my blog post makes it on before Seths! He already showed me he was using my phone, I am downloading iTunes and registering my phone now! It is 7:06PM CST.

Figure Drawing

I joined the Art League of Houston, and participated in the figure drawing lab. It was fun to get back into the groove of drawing from a live model. Most of the time we had about 20 minutes per pose. This was one of that last drawings where I decided to draw the models leg & foot and the artist across the room who was painting.

This is a digital enhanced contour drawing that I did of the model.

This is a photo I took today. Circles.

Trees

Today I was working on a commission piece of a family tree. While I was working on the tree, my friend, Michael called me as he was enjoying a beautiful day in Delaware Park. He was telling me about the beautiful trees - it just so happened I was working on trees.

This is the commission piece that I worked on for the Groves family and the parents 50th Anniversary.

From Two Commissions to One Abstract

I created the images you see here as a commission for a co-worker as a gift for her husband's and her anniversary. While I work on these images I see wonderful little abstracts.

This is the abstract that I created using cropped abstracts of the two doggy portraits that I did. In some ways it contains the essense of the two pieces, yet it also creates a different world where the viewer is left to bring their own experiences and life to the picture and to fill it in with their own thoughts.

This is the other dog portrait that I completed. It is such a small dos that I wanted to fill the canvas and make the dog large, given it prescence.

Remembering

I had a great day and evening tonight in Toronto. It is Pride Week and I attended the Candlelight Vigil in Allen Gardens. I will post pictures when I get back to Houston. It was a good time to reflect and remember all those who I have know who have died from AIDS.

Motherly Inspiration

This is an image of a painting that my mother, Dorothy, created. It hangs in the home of her friend, Iris. Iris loves contemporary art. Her and her daughter Susan are owners of some of my digital art pieces.

This piece created using canvas Painter and Adobe Photoshop was inspired by the picture my mother painted.

This is another piece that was created in a similar fashion.

This is a photo of my handprint that I left at the house I grew up in -- it was done when I was 12 years old --- in 1972 ! Yes, now you can calculate my age.

In the city

In Toronto - this past weekend visited my home in Western New York --- the house I grew up in has been sold, and my parents have been getting it ready for an estate sale. They will be closing and leaving permantly for Myrtle Beach come July. I had a great visit and father's day. You say but you're not a father. But I was told to enjoy it by a federal employee of the mail service - so I guess since I was recognized by the Federal Government agency! I guess I can celebrate the day.... and I did with my Father and we had breakfast at Como's in Niagara Falls, then a trip to the Casino, then watched the US Open and ate hot dogs at the Vanderburgh's -- yum.

Painting With God

Today was 2nd Saturdays...
It is a day when I open my studio to the public along with my fellow artists at Winter Street Studios.

It was the usual -- I got there early after eating a bagel at Einsteins, got a sandwich to go for later, opened, turned on the air conditioner because it was going to be hot!

I took out some paints and began. Since I had sold a figurative painting last time and the numbers of my human forms in my artwork were dwindling - I decided to review my sketchs from life drawing classes and look for inspiration.

But as many of you know, my mind and my eye are always working. You can see here I used my camera to capture not just the painting I was working on, but an image which is art unto itself. In a way you could call it a canvas, artist's paint on paper all the time. This was the bottom of a cup I used to clean my brushes. Interesting when you look at many of the pieces of my art which contain circles - a theme that keeps reoccuring.

I had many visitors, some I knew, some artists, and some I just met. I worked on my "inbetween" paintings -- this is where I take a digital art on canvas and paint on it. This is a picture of one called "paintndigitalclutter" it is based on another piece called "clutter". Here I painted directly onto the digital art piece - sometimes it felt like coloring, sometime I broken the rules and colored outside the lines! But that's what we do, us artists...see things in a different way.

After I left the studio today, I wandered around, called Mom & Dad, and got dinner and a movie. I rented "Conversations with God" -- and this is what struck me -- yes, I too hear that voice in my head, I too hear it as my own voice. I was told once when I was a teenager - "you are god, god is you". It has always stayed with me.

So this last piece of art you see hear I created tonight. It uses all my disciplines. It contains photos I took of an amazing cloud and sunlight formation I saw as I was leaving the studio today. It contains photos documenting the figurative drawing that I did as well as the painting that was inspired by that drawing the was started today. I combined them all into a single digital piece. I named it "Painting With God 004".

Someone asked me today, how can you do all this artwork and still hold a corporate job. I told them when I paint, when I draw, when I photograph, when I create digitally - I loose myself. In reality I learned from watching the movie today -- I do not loose myself -- I find myself, I connect and that connection allows me to create and communicate some amazing ideas.

So this piece is the first in my "Painting With God" Series... it's combination of Drawing, Painting, Photography and Digital Art is what makes this art unique. I am excited to see where these art pieces lead, and what conversations they begin and what questions they answer.

Something New

It was a great hot summer like day to enjoy a nice cold bowl of Gazpacho with an artist friend. Of course I took a picture of it. Sally Stubbs and I had dinner at a favorite restaurant of mine called Paulie's in Houston. I like to see what art they have hanging and some day hope that I will be able to hang there. We had great conversations about art and even came up with an art project to spend a day taking pictures. I can only tell you at this point it involves taking pictures and an old pair of boots. This weekend is fast approaching - so Saturday will be a painting day! A day to get messy. It is also Art Walk in Galveston - so I may venture there to see the art! Commissions to work on. Congrats to Jim on his show and the art talk he gave - secretly I wish I was there to hear it.
